Job Description:

The Acquisitions Editor for the Schiffer Publishing Imprint is a creative rainmaker for finding talented authors and developing publications that will develop a pipeline of publications to ensure the health and success of the imprint. A focus in the subjects of the Schiffer Imprint including but not limited to Art, Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Pop Culture, Decorative Arts, Photography, and more. This proactive communicator will require big-picture thinking to define and support the unique needs of the imprint backed by an added focus on the tactical aspects of the work to set and hold the direction of those collaborators on the team through setting and achieving specific standards for the imprint with an emphasis on market fit, customer value, creativity, quality, and schedule for publications that are focused on the target audience and subject matter of the imprint. The responsibilities are broad in scope, encompassing a wide variety of task specific activities requiring a sometimes-rapid shift in priorities based on calculated decision making. - -The Acquisitions Editor will work closely with the publisher and managing editor to oversee the business operations, develop the publishing vision for the imprint, and will represent this vision to the company, current and future authors, and partners. This person must have initiative to provide leadership to the imprint team; guide the direction and oversee the publication pipeline with integrity. While personally accountable for the sourcing and development of new publications and finding/developing authors, contracting, editorial and design development, marketing and sales alignment for publications target audience, problem resolution, and creating a collaborative goal focused environment. This person also must create and maintain a creative culture based on mutual respect and strive to develop publications that are of the highest quality for customers and profitable to the company. This person will oversee the creation of books by determining the specification and quality of production to ensure books meet the publishing vision and financial goals. This person will also collaborate with sales and marketing on shaping programs and branding for different channels and accounts. -This person is a confident team player with a can-do attitude, a creative thinker, and rainmaker for the imprint who is comfortable with a variety of work. From sourcing and developing new projects for targeted customer communities to the creation of and oversight of execution of the publication plans through both the incubator and imprint teams so that the publications inspire their core audience and the imprint meets its financial goals. A well-suited candidate can react at a faster-than-average pace to adjust quickly to changing market needs and come up with creative and practical ideas for dealing with challenges and pressures, realign the team or program and learn from these experiences. - -Role and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the acquisitions strategy of new projects for the imprint.
  • Find and develop talented authors and publications. -
  • Establish a strong pipeline and manage its projects and resources according to budget/plan. -
  • Develop 3 year rolling publication strategy to align with imprint and revenue goals; update as needed per shifting market trends and company goals. -
  • Manage all aspects of product development including strategic market-based acquisition, new and repackaged content development (including asset approvals and book mapping), contract execution, author recruitment/management, editing, layout, and production. -
  • Establish budgets and plans to inform projects and resource allocation to meet the revenue targets for the imprint. -
  • Ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and at expected quality level. -
  • Serve as project/imprint champion; present new titles to sales team and with key customers as needed on a seasonal basis. Serve as the advocate to build excitement and product knowledge so teams are set up for success when approaching buyers. Act as brand ambassador to external communities, maintain industry relationships, stay on-trend. -
  • Align the publications marketing strategy (print/digital/social) and collateral development for the imprint. -
  • Ensure the metadata and marketing assets are accurate for every title published (including 3-D image, flipbook link, Amazon thumbnails, Amazon LITB, Amazon A+, Amazon author page, Edelweiss content, splash graphic, BDB website update, social media posts, launch video) are delivered to the supporting teams. Develop and deliver a seasonal catalog and other sales materials as agreed and required to advance the line and meet goals.
  • Attend shows and gatherings of people from the communities that the imprint serves to ensure Imprint is on trend and focused on the market needs. -
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key authors, influencers, and community organizations for the categories of the imprint. -SKILLS
    • Demonstrated expertise and success in illustrated book publishing
    • Solid knowledge of book publishing processes and functions - managing Editorial, production, design, sales, marketing, customer service, warehouse, and how they interface.
    • Strong contacts in the publishing industry.
    • Deep knowledge of product mix at different accounts.
    • Experience in P&L process and financial management.
    • Strong communication skills with the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings to a variety of audiences
    • Results-driven, and goal-focused; an ability to take ownership of a variety of projects and make timely decisions.
    • Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and demonstrated ability to follow up and follow through on multiple tasks and manage time effectively.
