Registered Nurse- Cardiac First Assist to join our team in
Wilmington, DE.
must have a minimum of 2 years experience in pediatric CVOR with
scrub and circulate to qualify for sign on.
This position is responsible for:
The expanded functions unique to the RN first Assistant during
surgical intervention are to assume responsibility in advanced
surgical assisting skills such as providing exposure, tissue
handling, suturing, providing hemostasis and using surgical
instruments.
Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs
for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities
to improve services, making recommendations and implementing
actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours
Foundation.
Position Responsibilities
* Demonstrates competency to apply the nursing process in all
facets of nurse first assistant role.
* Demonstrates competency to exercise critical thinking skills in
all aspects of the RNFA role.
* Demonstrates competency to establish and maintain a safe
perioperative area.
* Recognizes potential hazards and initiates preventive and/or
corrective actions at any time throughout the perioperative
continuum
* Performs or assists with positioning, prepping and draping of
patient
* Protects patient from thermal, electrical, chemical and/or
mechanical injury
* Able to recognize possible adverse reactions the patient may
experience during the surgery encounter
* Assumes accountability with the surgical team verification of the
correct patient, site and procedure.
* Demonstrates knowledge of patient safety standards published by
regulatory bodies
* Demonstrates competency to provide technical first assistance to
the surgeon in the operating room and throughout the perioperative
period. Demonstrates competency to provide technical first
assistance to the surgeon during surgical procedures at the
patient's bedside.
* Demonstrates clinical expertise with the proposed surgical
procedure, approach, and clinical anatomy
* Possesses the essential mental discipline and fine motor skills
to provide technical assistance to the surgeon
* Adheres to principles of aseptic technique to prevent infection
and promote optimal wound healing
* Accepts appropriate delegated medical functions as defined within
the RNFA scope of practice. Must maintain a minimum of 100 hours
per year to maintain competent in his or her role.
* Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating
bleeding points, ligating vessels and by all other means as
directed and supervised by surgeon.
* Inserts and positions instrumentation.
* Places drains
* Applies surgical dressings
* Demonstrates competency to work as a professional colleague with
the physician and to enhance the effectiveness of patient care.
* Partners with the surgeon to collaboratively direct the patient's
perioperative course
* Serves as educator, mentor, consultant and resource to patients
and colleagues
* Promotes professionalism and models professional behaviors to
other health care providers and to the public.
* Maintains professional credentials
* Attends weekly Pre/Post Cardiac Surgical Conference
* Attends daily Cardiac Surgical Rounds as surgical schedule
permits
* Demonstrates knowledge of risk management, professional liability
and malpractice issues
* Practices in an ethical manner
* Seeks and participates in learning opportunities
* Participates in professional activities and defined processes
directed toward improving patient care
* Participates in the research process to build and promote RNFA
clinical practice
* Must have the ability to work well with others.
* Regular attendance is required.
* Good communications skills are required.
Position Requirements
* Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in both the Cardiac scrub and
circulator roles and diversified OR experience
* Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing
* Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Delaware
* Registered Nurse Licensure -New Jersey and Pennsylvania- (Can be
obtained after hire)
* RNFA Candidate and/or Completion of a RNFA program*
* CNOR Certification preferred
* PALS Certification
* CRNFA certification preferred
* Completion of a RNFA program and certifications are waved for
RNFA "grandfathered" in to first assistant role or per Primary
Cardiac Surgeon
