Summary:Under direct supervision of the Patient Care Hostess Lead in Nutritional Services, delivers and collects menus and trays to and from patients. Attends to all patient food service needs, including nourishments and snacks. Act as a liaison between the patient, the Nutritional Services Department, and Patient Care team for communication of all patient food needs. Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.Other information:On the job training provided for the actual position.Ability to read & follow oral & written instructions & established policies and procedures. Must have Excellent Customer Service Skills and some basic diet knowledge.Responsibilities:Transporting and handling of patient carts and trays. "[5] Always ready to meet the carts in their designated drop off areas, carts sit unattended as little as possible and generally are promptly served; ALWAYS follows guidelines for accurate tray delivery, and ALWAYS follows hand washing guidelines. Patients are always assisted to their satisfaction with each meal, with the tray set-up, follow-up rounding, and contacting the food service dept. for food items not available in the patient care area, however, hostess carries items frequently needed/requested by patients. Always complies with the diet order. Positive comments are frequently shared by patient/peer customers. Supports patient care in tray pick-up and intake documentation. [3] Usually is ready to meet the carts in their designated drop off areas. Trays are served promptly. Team member always follows guidelines for accurate tray delivery, and always follows hand washing guidelines. Always completes follow up rounds on each meal and contacting the food service dept. for food items not readily available in the patient care area. May need support from the Diet Office/RD to answer diet questions. Supports patient care in tray pick-up and intake documentation. [1] Often isn't ready to receive carts; and/or trays are not promptly served; patients are not assisted with the set up their tray; Doesn't follow established policies related to tray delivery/pick-up." Accurate Diet Knowledge. "[5] Exhibits an exceptional knowledge of diets as evidenced by their support in diet education, menu completion, and food/beverage requests. Basic education is completed on all patients per policy. [3] Exhibits a good basic understanding of diets ordered at BMC as evidenced by diet education, menu completion, and food/beverage requests. May need to contact Diet Office/RD with diet questions. Basic diet education is completed on patients per policy. [1] Has limited knowledge of diets. Approves or requests items frequently that do not comply with the patient's diet order, causing rework by the Diet Office staff. " Stocking of food and non-food supplies in patient care areas. "[5] Always stocks assigned areas according to customer needs ; accurate & thorough in stocking; always communicates when stock in the kitchen is low for reordering purposes; always delivers stock to the proper areas, gaining signatures of patient care staff; uses time wisely to accomplish the task. Always checks refrigerators and storage areas in the patient care area to make sure items are dated/labeled and in date. Always makes sure refrigerator temps are documented in the Patient Care Area. [3] Occasionally may not stock to the customer need ; may occasionally not share when stock is low for reordering purposes in the kitchen; always delivers stock to the proper areas; occasionally may take longer than needed to complete the job of stocking. Checks refrigerators and storage areas in the patient care area to make sure items are dated/labeled and in date as well as temperatures have been taken. [1] Often doesn't stock areas assigned according to customer need; or is not accurate or thorough in stocking, & never shares when stock is low for restocking purposes with kitchen staff; often does not deliver stock to the proper areas, & frequently takes longer than necessary to complete the task. Doesn't support patient care by checking refrigerators and storage areas as above. " Menu Assistance. "[5] Always passes out menus and assists patients and/or their support with menu completion. Hand deliveries marked menus back to the Diet Office, and helps place them in for the correct meal. Always confirms menus with patients (as needed) prior to the next meal to improve patient satisfaction/rework by food service. Always offers write-owns to patients who desire more choices within the dept. policy and diet guidelines. [3] As above, but may not reach all patients to confirm their menu for the next meal resulting in patients sometimes having to wait for additional food/beverages to be delivered. [1] Does not support any aspect of above." Diet Office Support. [5] Always returns to the Diet Office before meals to confirm menus are accurate and are in for those patients who participate in selecting; Always makes necessary changes to menus prior to meal for those patients who request changes between meals; Always relieves the Diet Office staff for breaks/meals; Assists in any other clerical tasks as needed accurately [3] Returns to the Diet Office prior to meals confirming and making any necessary changes prior to the next meal; occasional may need to contact the Diet Office with last minute requests from the Patient Care Area; may occasionally not be able to relieve Diet Office Staff for meals/breaks[1] Often doesn't return to the Diet Office to confirm menus prior to the next meal for patients; or work is not accurate in the Diet Office Simple Diet Education [5] Educates all patients on the basics of the Nutritional Services Dept. and their diet order; always documents this education according to dept. policies; promptly refers patients and/or their support with more in-depth questions to the RD [3] Educate most patients on the basics of the Nutritional Services Dept., and their diet order; always documents according to dept. policies; refers patient/support to RDs [1] As above, however, does not follow documentation guidelines and/or doesn't promptly refer patients who would benefit from RD support, causing the patient not to be seen or out the door diet education. [5] Always communicates Patient Care issues with the charge nurse and food issues with the Diet Office; Makes sure preferences, food intolerances and/or allergies are documented in the Diet Office; Difficult diet questions or pts. who appear to be at nutritional risk are promptly referred to the RD [3] Communicates as above; but may not make sure that patient specifics are documented in the diet office, however, they have been verbally communicated [1] Does not promptly share any issues related to Patient Care and/or Diet Office Between Meals Trays. [3] Following all dept./patient care specific guidelines for safety but does not offer ideas for ways to improve safety.
