Job Description:
**Overview**
We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist with expertise in
Systems Biology and Machine Learning, who will join a talented,
multi-investigator team to lead projects involving **environmental
microbial communities, metabolic modeling, and machine learning for
multi-omics data integration and analysis.** Additional
applications will likely include molecular design, biomolecular
function determination, and advanced 'omics data interpretation.
Research will be in areas such as impact of soil microbiome on
crops and carbon cycling; engineering microorganisms and microbial
populations for applications like renewable bioenergy; and
mechanistic studies supporting human health research.
**Responsibilities**
Responsibilities include supporting activities such as:
+ Intellectual leadership through development of research proposals
and providing guidance on the state-of-the-art approaches, all
while considering necessary future directions that keep PNNL a
leader in these fields long term
+ Developing external funding to expend the breadth of scientific
reach at PNNL, which includes being the PI and task lead on
proposals, overseeing and writing publications, and generally
delivering scientific advances that elevate PNNL's reputation in
microbiome studies and multi-omics data analysis
+ Engaging with sponsors to produce successful projects,
peer-reviewed papers, technical presentations, and otehr technical
artifacts
+ Training and mentoring early and mid-career researchers and
working collaboratively with researchers across PNNL and other
institutes around the world
**Qualifications**
Minimum Qualifications:
+ BS/BA with 5 years of experience
+ MS/MA with 3 years of experience
+ PhD with 1 year of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
+ PhD in computational aspects of biology, biochemistry,
bioinformatics or related field with 1+ years of research
experience.
+ Demonstrated success in training scientists/students in systems
biology of microbiomes and machine learning
+ Work history of leading interdisciplinary teams to develop and
execute small to major research projects.
+ Recognized scientific creativity and leadership.
+ Broad understanding of the state of microbiome analyses, machine
learning and AI, and biomolecular function prediction using
computational methods.
+ Experience designing and implementing novel modeling and/or
analysis frameworks for microbiome applications.
+ Strong verbal and written communications skills.
+ Experience participating in multidisciplinary scientific
teams.
+ Experience coding in Python and/or R.
+ Experience with DOE's KBase framework, metagenome analysis, and
flux-balance analysis modeling.
+ Experience using HPCs and cloud computing resources.
